I sorta get what you’re saying, but rather than just pick any random distro and handpick every application myself, I put effort into finding a distro which has the most default apps that I’m happy with. I use KDE Neon because I like Dolphin, Konsole, Konqueror, and the pre-installed version of VLC; however, I DON’T use the default email client, text editor, etc.

Am I the only one that’s fine with whatever the OS provides out of the box? Like, as long as I can turn the bell off and change the font, I’m chillin, and I have yet to run into a terminal that doesn’t provide those options.

Curious to hear what drives people to seek out other options (besides tiling, that I understand, I’m a tabs guy myself tho)

Hard to know for sure without knowing what exactly it is you’re trying to run, but since you’re using an AMD processor, I would guess it’s NOT a firmware/driver issue. New Intel processors would be a different story.

Even today, not every application is programmed to use multiple cores effectively, or at all. Again, we need to know what application(s) you’re running when this happens

Sort of, if you’re writing a research paper or presentation or something like that with a lot of math in it, you can use Latex (for the whole thing, not just the formulas). It’s 10000X better than writing the same stuff in Word, especially if you know how to code

Idk if this has been proven, but I’m certain that the current desktop versions of Office apps are just Electron-style wrappers for the web versions. I switched from Windows to Linux about a year ago and have found the web apps to be perfectly sufficient

Torrenting requires way more resources than people realize. It’s easy to look at your torrents’ download speeds and think “oh, that’s less than a normal download, like from Steam, so it must not take nearly as many resources” – it’s not all about bandwidth. The amount of encryption and hashing involved in torrenting is fairly CPU heavy (every ~4 MB piece has to be hashed and verified), especially if your CPU doesn’t have onboard encryption hardware (think mobile devices). The sheer number of connections involved even in just one torrent can also bog down a network like you wouldn’t believe – anyone who runs a home seedbox can attest.
