You leave a comment saying these are special and all the others are more or less the same, but don’t explain how that’s the case.

How are each of those special? And how are others, inc. Gentoo, almost the same?

First off, the packages and libraries on the AUR are not scanned, and not all packages and libraries are well tested or maintained there, especially when building from their source yourself instead of relying on their releases. The more you install that way and the more depends on it, the more points in your system are likely to fail.

Your distro’s repos might not have everything and be a bit out of date at times, but they are scanned and usually better tested and maintained. Usually, not always.

They might still pull a corporate fast one on you, but at least they will apologise profusely over it.

I feel like the whole apologising profusely thing is a stereotype about Japanese people, maybe with a core of truth in it, but it doesn’t seem to apply to their corporate culture.

It’s not just the branding, it’s the actual command.

Do you want to launch the hardware monitor? gnome-system-monitor. The terminal? gnome-terminal. And so forth.

Your DE They will give these clearer and easier names to search from the menu, as well as more recognisable icons, but that’s not on Gnome

Is compiling scripts an option? Aka compiling them in C, C++, Rust, whatever for your router on another machine, and copying and executing those binaries on your router?

I mean, it’s a functional programming language and an incredibly good one. But it probably has a far too big footprint for their use-case…

Why aren’t python and bash be available in all your systems? Which languages would be?

I would’ve recommended python, otherwise perl or Haskell (maybe Haskell’s too big) or something, but now I’m worried that whatever reason makes python undoable also makes perl etc. undoable
