Indeed… I avoided it for years because I bought into the “it’s too heavy” narrative.
Then I saw a phoronics benchmark sayin it was actually faster and lighter than lxde if you turn effects off
I tried it then and was blown away, never looked back

And for those who have not tried it, the desktop is fully functional (not some half baked version. My son uses the desktop mode as a full school workstation for internet browsing, email, teams, Google docs, etc
Obviously a matter of taste and not trying to insult anyone but I never saw the appeal of the Toy Story movies and, adding the Steve Jobs link to Pixar, this is the ONE thing I never liked about Debian
Other than that I used it for YEARS with no issues whatsoever. Debian is honestly rock solid. I only gave it up when I built a bleeding edge machine (it was bleeding edge for a whole 2 months maybe? hehehe) and I did not trust myself modding it enough to allow for super fresh drivers and other software.
I am now on Garuda Linux which is pretty awesome but I still miss good, solid, old Debian
I agree, but there is a big difference in saying “I don’t know what to do, I need to learn this new thing” vs “there is a scary part to Linux and there is no way around it”
Saying “driving manual is hard” is fine, saying “you need to learn to shift gears without a clutch to drive” is wrong and would scare potential drivers
Sure. And hopefully he can post a follow up video where he correct the misinformation on this first one
Totally get it… but sadly, other people who follow him would listen to his vids and conclude “Linux is too inconvenient for me” based on mistaken info
Precisely… which means switching to Linux is not inherently less convenient than windows
I did… he tosses out a ton of misinformation about how hard Linux is. The fact he decided to “stay and endure the hardship” doesn’t mean the message he is pushing is sadly misinformed
“I got the confidence to really jump into Linux after the Steam Deck.”
I offered my son (16) to get him an “office” computer for his room so he can do homework and emails and junk. He said he felt so comfortable with Linux because of the Steam Deck and we could instead just get a nicer monitor and a docking station and he will use the Deck as a gaming machine AND office workstation whenever our main computer (also Linux) is busy
To be honest, a lot of system configuration is better done on the CLI or editing configuration files manually
and this is apparently a “problem”… people shy from the command line and fail to realize “we” continue to use it, not because there is no GUI alternative but because it is simply awesome!
Gotta love these videos… they can be summarized as follows:
“I hate Windows so I will try Linux with no prep… Linux is not identical to Windows in x, y, z and therefore Linux is still deficient… Looks like I cannot do everything I could think of without reading a single line of documentation, conclusion, LiNUx iS nOT ReADy!”
Same reason poor people defend billionaires… the poor people somehow think they may get there. Tim fights Apple because it is an impediment for him to get to his own walled garden
Not recommending Ubuntu because of those 2 things, both of which can be turned off easily, seems a bit extreme. Like not recommending a Toyota because some of the inside trim attrack dust
As an intro into Linux, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone even if I myself moved on from it
The open source equivalent of obsidian is Logseq
Not sure how it actually compares as I have not used obsidian but I love it, it does enough for what I need
For me personally, it was all about balance.
15 years ago, Gmail/Inbox was a great email client, the domain was great and popular (so no need to spell it out for people) and I would “pay” by getting ads based on my emails read by a bot.
Now Gmail is a terrible email client, the best updates are ridiculous things like moving buttons around and it takes Google years to roll out. The thing loses emails, mislabels and misclassifies stuff and the rules work for a week then blow up. On top of that, google is now basically a proctologist considering how far up my ass they want to go
The balance is broken… Google now officially sucks (IMO)
It was… I was accessing my work email which unfortunately runs on Exchange… having said that, sorry, either support whatever crap MS puts or out don’t… “losing” emails cannot be part of a ready-for-public email client
Now, from what I read at the time, it was not “Owl for exchange”'s bug, it was Thunderbird. It apparently happens with other email sources as well, however you can “repair” your mailbox to get them back when you notice
LOL loved that
