  • What the hell is this headline?

The claim has always been that the planned green energy investments and state-owned company ‘Great British Energy’ will save ‘up to’ £300 (compared to 2023 prices) by 2030.

This BBC article from May 2024, before Labour were even in government, confirms this.

There’s nothing to “admit” – nothing is being pushed back or watered down. The timeframe has always been 2030.

The £300 estimate actually comes from a non-Labour-affiliated right wing think tank that uses less ambitious modeling than what labour actually wants to put in place. So assuming that goes well, it could be better than £300, or the £300 could be achieved even sooner than 2030, but Labour haven’t made any promises about that.

Honestly, sometimes it feels like the supposedly left-wing outlets such as The Morning Star would prefer to have the Tories or Reform in charge than have a Labour government that’s not headed by Corbyn.

  • This article Guardian article, on top of just being an allegation in a book, doesn’t accuse Powell of doing what Skwawkbox says he did.

Literally all it says is that the press chief of the 1999 Chilean government (i.e. 10 years and 2 governments after Pinochet stepped down) had meetings with Powell. That’s it. Seems normal to me. I imagine the UK government would be chatting to Chile if they arrested David Cameron tomorrow.

Frei and his government, by the way, was anti-Pinochet. During his presidency, he indicted and arrested Pinochet.

I don’t know how you could read that and think it’s a confirmation that Powell negotiated release for Pinochet.

  • Is this straight up misinformation? I’ve been through 6 articles now and I can’t find any other source on this outside of Skwawkbox.

All I can find is stuff about him being a major person behind the Good Friday Agreement and HK + Chagos Islands handovers.

Even the Telegraph and fucking GB News – both of which try to paint Labour/Starmer in the worst light possible – don’t say anything about Pinochet. Where does this alleged link come from?

Looking into it, Skwawkbox has been caught lying multiple times, predominantly about the Grenfell Fire. They’ve also lost a libel case against one Labour MP and breached reporting standards about another. They, and I’m really not joking here, describe themselves as a non-traditional publication aimed at “aunties and uncles on Facebook”.

If anybody has any other sources please correct me on this.

  • As much as I’d love to munch some popcorn and see Lammy double down on calling Trump out for being a fascist dickhead, that obviously wouldn’t be in the interest of the UK and would probably be an unwise thing for the Foreign Secretary of all ministers to do.

Damaging the prospects of the UK just to get a sick twitter burn in against a pussy-grabbing wannabe despot is not a rational and pragmatic course of action, even if it would be very funny/morally correct.

Unfortunately, Trump did win an election and we do have to put up with him/navigate around him for the next four years.

I do hope, though, that the Republicans becoming more and more unhinged prompts us to be a bit less US-reliant, and to seek partnerships with other countries, and to make our own country a bit more self-reliant.
