I wonder if she ever will say “okay sorry guys, maybe I made some mistakes”. If she did then maybe people would mock her less. People are a bit relentless in mocking her these days.

SleafordMod@feddit.ukto UK Politics@feddit.uk•Voters want Keir Starmer to focus on rebuilding trade ties with EU, poll revealsEnglish4·6 days agoI guess in the upcoming local elections you could vote for whoever you want, even if it’s a smaller party.
But I would say that in a general election, it makes sense to vote tactically. If you live in a constituency that is a tight race between Labour and the Tories, and your favourite party is the Lib Dems, but you prefer Labour to the Tories, then surely the sensible vote would be for Labour, since the Lib Dems don’t have a chance of winning that seat.

For a few years now, Sky has been owned by Comcast, the American conglomerate that owns NBC and Universal Pictures.
What bias do you think it shows? If it was biased in favour of Sir Keir then it probably wouldn’t mention the policy shifts that he has taken over the last 5 years. Or it would at least try to spin those policy shifts.

The ones who weren’t so good were easily angered and lashed out at the class. The ones who I much preferred knew how to lay down rules and get the respect of the class.

Lack of employment generally (not just health related) seems to be a problem - apparently the percentage of young people who aren’t in employment, education, or training is increasing.
I think Sir Gareth has identified some of the problems too. Lack of healthy role models, abundance of unhealthy role models. Abundance of porn, especially unhealthy porn. Negative effects of social media. Etc.
SleafordMod@feddit.ukOPto United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Sir Gareth Southgate: Boys need role models, not gaming and pornEnglish8·1 month agoEven if Jesus was fictional, He’s still a pretty good role model by what’s written about Him.
If Christianity only expected people to think that Jesus was a good role model then maybe I would be more willing to turn up at my local church. But Christianity expects a further belief: that Jesus is the son of God, which is a supernatural claim.
Personally I’m just not sure I believe the supernatural stuff.
SleafordMod@feddit.ukOPto United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Sir Gareth Southgate: Boys need role models, not gaming and pornEnglish2·1 month agoWe didn’t have smartphone on us 24/7. And of course content producers have gotten better at making their stuff visually stimulating and addictive.
Yeah I think both of those could be reasons why young people have problems today. Another reason could be the Covid lockdowns, which resulted in young people spending more time online, and less time in the real world.
When I was young I spent some time online, using internet forums etc. But the most fun I had was when I socialised with real people in the real world.
SleafordMod@feddit.ukOPto United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Sir Gareth Southgate: Boys need role models, not gaming and pornEnglish15·1 month agoTrue, you could argue that young women are also being negatively affected by “toxic influencers”.
I guess Gareth has chosen to focus on issues facing young men though. Of course Gareth has experience mentoring young men, as the manager of England’s men’s football team.
Society probably should help both young women and young men, but maybe each group faces slightly different problems. E.g. according to the Samaritans, men are 3 times as likely to die from suicide as women, although women attempt suicide more than men do. So both groups clearly have problems, but they seem to deal with those problems in different ways. Maybe different approaches are needed when helping each gender.

I thought that only applied to conservatives who have been accused of sexual harassment.
Being serious though, I agree with @mannycalavera@feddit.uk that killers probably shouldn’t be venerated, but it’s definitely interesting that the Luigi case has inspired a lot of discussion, so I wondered what Lemmy users might think about this mural.

Apparently Diane Abbott has suggested Labour should introduce a wealth tax instead of tightening rules around PIP. But maybe it’s unlikely that the government will do this.
SleafordMod@feddit.ukto UK Politics@feddit.uk•Many said the Starmer era would be just Tory-lite – now it’s worse than that. Time to stop the pretenceEnglish71·1 month agoI don’t think I can conclude whether Labour’s proposals on this matter will be good or not until I see some numbers, conveying how this will actually affect people. I think everyone understands that the country can’t afford everything, but also of course people who can’t work should be financially supported.
This article says that tightening the eligibility rules for PIP “could mean about 620,000 people lose £675 a month on average”. That sounds like a lot. How much do they already get though? Maybe £675 a month is too much to lose. I guess I’ll follow the news to see how this actually affects people.

The author says that he ended up being grateful for the strictness from his mother - he thinks she took him away from a dangerous criminal life.
I wonder whether British parents generally these days are not strict enough, or too strict. Clearly this guy thinks that strictness when growing up can be beneficial, even if it’s painful at the time.

I don’t think I’m convinced of God’s existence myself. But I think freedom of belief is important - we should be free to believe or not believe in God, because I don’t think anybody knows the answer for certain.
SleafordMod@feddit.ukOPto United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Jobless, isolated, fed misogynistic porn… where is the love for Britain’s lost boys?English73·1 month agoWhat evidence is there that proves God’s existence?
Maybe. But in a democracy the voters choose what they want, whether you like their choice or not.
Maybe the political centre needed to do a better job of serving the people who ultimately voted for Brexit and Trump. Those people felt that politicians didn’t care about them at all.
