a text editor that has a tutor because it’s been around for so long and it’s had so many years to establish itself with an outside control interface that’s quite literally about as optimal as it can be. Vim basically allows you to never move your hands away from the homerow keys, even when navigating and doing bulk edits. The sheer amount of gained speed and productivity you get from this combined with the amount of times you’ll have to deal with text editing throughout your life is probably going to outweight any potential learned annoyances.

generally i still to camelcase if i have no separators, if i do have separators i stick to - now. _ sucks. I use . notation when dealing with copies of files.bak or something like that.

this is why i’ve been really enjoying games like minecraft and factorio, minecraft updates regularly but the server and instance that i play is still just 1.16.5 so i don’t even have to worry about updating it.

Similar thing for factorio, although the updates are generally very infrequent, and large updates are massive feature updates. like the upcoming 2.0 expansion, outside of that i just dont really play games much lol.

i like the names they’re cute, i just wish they would attach vesion numbers to the names in official docs because it is a specific hell trying to figure out what release is what version without having a master look up table to consult.

because there’s also a lot of good stuff on the internet. There was very little on the internet in 2002, and yet people still used it because it was cool. There is a shit ton of information on the internet now, most of which is garbage, and the rest is somewhere between mediocre, or decent, and some of it being genuinely good.

If you hate living, why even bother living? It’s a question of the ages. What’s the point of living if there is no grander purpose? Surely it means nothing, right?

yeah, it also helps knowing how to use the thing, but i consider that to be “basic documentation” personally.

Knowing how to set something up is nice, but knowing how to use it properly after setting it up is even nicer.

as a chronic documentation reader, the best advice i can give is to document everything Anything that the user can and will potentially interact with, should be extensively documented, including syntax and behavior. Write it like you’re coming back to the project in 5 years after having done nothing and you want to be able to skip right to using it. When we build something ourselves, we often hold a bit of internal knowledge from the design process that never quite goes away, so it’s almost always a lot easier for us to reverse engineer something we’ve made, than it is for someone else with zero fore-knowledge to do it themselves.

Generally this can be a bit of a nightmare, but if you minimize the user facing segment it’s not all that bad, because it’s usually pretty minimal, and what would otherwise be a handful of pages, turns into 10 or maybe 15.

as for existing documentation, the i3wm user guide is really good, it’s pretty minimalist but it leaves you enough to be able to manage.

this is just because it’s webhosted, anything that does anything on the web sucks and is terrible, everything else is actually so much better it’s fucking baffling to me.

you can debloat windows, yeah. But it might also install malware on your system, or irreversibly break windows as microsoft is well known for not breaking things

Windows is theoretically built in a modular manner that prevents things from being weirdly placed and hard to track down, but it isn’t adhered too!

Most problems with windows, are ironically, not really a problem with windows. But a problem with microsoft specifically, or the way that software is developed for windows.

i think the distros that “just work” are a great way to get into linux, but i do still think it’s something that you need to familiarize yourself with. It’s like driving a car, if you want to go somewhere in the US, you’re gonna need to know how to do it.
