The thing with that is that nobody can get (much) use out of my old phones, because I already use them until they’re broken or unreasonably old - when even aftermarket ROMs like LineageOS don’t get security updates anymore, it’s time to retire that phone, and I regularly use my phones beyond that point.

Yes, but most people trade their phones in after two to three years.
The article says right there that only 1 in 3 people are doing that (in europe).
